it's just a slap in the face
to every kid who heard
"we'll never let it happen again"
but here it happens again...
light a fire in the city on the hill
it was the story 'bout some far away place
but not where I live
'cause I see children in cages
I see officers shoot
I see a hundred-thousand dead when I turn on the news
I see a tiring workforce
and people digging through the garbage for food
light a fire in the city on the hill
I saw the towers collapse
I watched a crooked war
I see the bankers get rich on the backs of the poor
I saw a woman get swept off her feet
by a fleet of unmarked vans that had filled up the streets
so light a fire in the city on the hill
*are you better off?*
I watched my father leave the house for the last time
I didn't know then just how young you are at 39
I know injustice lives right here in my home
maybe it's spared you yet,
it comes for all of us...
light a fire in the city on the hill

hit the pavement
I even made a little sign
I see what's happening
I figured maybe it was time
"I should get out there"
I always wondered, "where's the line?"
I guess they crossed it
I guess they crossed it
where are we really headed?
I think I know
there are some kids throwing rocks
I saw some spray paint cans
but mostly everyone is friendly and peaceful
i talked to a woman who was afraid for her son
so while she protested herself
she made her son stay home
and as it starts to get darker things get a little more rough
another group shows up
and one of them has a gun
a group of officers gather
at the end of the block
i don't want any trouble so i start heading home
and as I'm leaving I hear orders from the cops to move west
the street in front of my apartment has been cordoned off
so I approach the blockade to find out how to get home
when I hear yelling and a rubber bullet hits me in the chest...
i hit the pavement
tear gas canisters crack
my arms get pulled behind my back
this is the story of some kid who lives near Lafayette Park
or maybe Belarus
or maybe Lebanon
we create chaos everywhere and then we fan the flames
another partisan is made
and everyone is dug in
where are we really headed
I think I know...
